marketing so its good to get some sort of affirmation from others that what you’re on the right track. And that is what I felt when reading an article titled ” Marketing: For small-business operators, it’s good to remember the basics” by Bruce Spotleson.

Small Business Marketing Tips

Here’s some take aways from the article:

“I think one key to small business is reputation management,” he said. “Commitment to quality. And the ability to do something different than the big guys.”

I think of ‘reputation’ to be what customers are saying about my store, i.e. ‘word of mouth’, making it more likely that their friends and acquaintances will check the store out. But you can also make a reputation, without paying for advertising. Sending a ‘story’ or press release to local newspapers is a great way.

Also this leads into the following:

“Know how to tell your story — that you’re different or better or that the service is better. That whatever service or quality you’re providing is at a level that people want to talk about.”

And here is where small businesses can really make inroads into keeping their customers

In the end, one of the things that makes small businesses work is the commitment and passion of the owner. “When you have a stake and an investment on the line, you’re that much more dedicated,” Marion said.

He noted it was almost always possible for the owner’s passion to be reflected by employees, creating a single unified team that takes good care of customers.

“People hate it when they go into a place and it’s obvious they don’t care, that you’re just a customer, and that if you don’t buy, someone else will. It’s an overused cliché, but a successful small business truly is like a family.”

I hope these small business marketing tips have either affirmed that you are doing the best for you business or given you a few ideas 🙂 Please do check out the full article more words of wisdom.

  1. Small businesses have the advantage of the owner’s passion and personality! Support small business 🙂

  2. I would add that the passion has to turn into caring about the customer ending in a sort of micro community within the communty at large. A small local business owner is often called upon to do things when they have established relationships with their customers. That is what makes a great town IMHO
